What is Domestic Violence Domestic Violence is a highly prevalent public health problem with devastating effects on individuals, families and the communities. Most Americans are seen at some point in their lives by healthcare workers, and the health care setting offers a critical opportunity for early identification and even the primary prevention of abuse. It is imperative that as healthcare workers, any suspicion of domestic violence be addressed. Domestic violence can take many different forms and does not have one uniform characteristics. According to the national coalition against domestic violence â€Å"domestic violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, and/or abusive behavior as pattern of power and control† (What is domestic violence, 2015). The Florida department of law enforcement defines domestic violence as â€Å"any assault, aggravated assault, battery, aggravated battery, sexual assault, sexual battery, stalking, aggravated stalking, kidnapping, false imprisonment, or any criminal offense resulting in physical injury or death of one family or household member by another family or household member† (What is domestic violence, 2015). Domestic violence include intimate partner violence, battering, relationship abuse, spousal abuse, family violence. In other words, today domestic violence no longer describes conflict between intimate partners such as a husband and wife, it can also describe conflict between other family members.
