Now that you have the college diploma and the dream job, how are you going to pay back those student loans? Here are a few tips to get you started: 1. Start paying back before you graduate While you were busy studying and working hard to get that shiny new diploma, what you should have been doing was paying the interest on your student loans. Think about it, later on, would you rather be paying down the original amount you borrowed, or would you rather pay interest on the interest on the original amount? While it s understandable that you re a college student and can t afford much, you should be a minimum of $20 a month toward your loans during the school year. When you have that full time summer job, you should increase that amount. Paying a little back at a time while you re still in school will not only look great for you, it will make those loans a lot easier to pay back when you graduate. 2. Take payments out of your paycheck before you ever see it Ask your employer if you can have student loan payments deducted directly from your paycheck. That will make it impossible to skip a payment because you really wanted to ta ke that weekend trip or you just have to have those new shoes. Questions On World War I And The Peace Conference
Jaia Gillette Mr. Pozniak Hn. Global Studies 27 October 2016 Unit 2 Assignment Introduction Questions (Part I-III) Part I: 1. World War I and the peace conference that followed after ââ¬Å"shaped the outlines of todayââ¬â¢s Middle Eastâ⬠, because the significant events involved in both led to the creation of new borders that would determine how the Middle East is configured in the present. One of the results of the war was the fall of the Ottoman Empire, which at the time had ruled over a vast majority of the Middle East. The Paris Peace conference proposed a plan to allow European countries to expand into the Middle East after the destruction of the Ottoman Empire. However, this plan was not supported by the U.S. Senate because of the conferences rejection of President Wilsonââ¬â¢s Fourteen Point Plan and was ultimately rejected. Instead, Britain and France carried out the Sykes-Picot agreement that they had initially created in secret before the end of the war, which would divide up the Ottoman Empire between the two. 2. World War II prompted U.S. leaders to pay greater attention to the oil resources of the Persian Gulf region, because in order to maintain its status as one of the global elites in oil in the case of a domestic shortage, the United States needed to secure an available foreign oil source during the war. 3. Corporate Governance - Ethics and CSR
Question: Discuss about the Corporate Governance, Ethics and CSR. Answer: Introduction It is widely known that management plays a significant role in shaping of an organizations future, as well as the optimum utilization of resources including the efficacy of management. Since, organizations are managed by policies, systems and guidelines. They tend to act as dynamic instruments, hence the need of them being reviewed from time to time so as to gauge the efficacy in the organization. Sometimes, it could be taken that the reviews undertaken review the said policy being sound and effectively put in place. But, as time progresses there tend to emerge wrong practices and there tends to be reasons for the problems occurring hence the need of this steps being taken forthwith. Reviews done by (Fort, 2004) show that problems have occurred in spite the existence of policies which means that policies at times need amending of modification for the best interest of the firm. Therefore, for there to be efficacy in organizations system there is the need of there being a concrete ethi cal codes and governance. As we will see in the case provided, there we will see Andrea an accountant who is told to act unethically by reducing profits in the financial books so that they could be indicated in 2018 and 2019 financial books. According to Ha?Yry, (2007), he perceives that an organization is a group of more than two people ten of thousand that work tirelessly to ensure that they have achieved a common goal or set of goals. Therefore, this shows that organizations are made up of integrated parts that work on accomplishing shared goals. Hence, through ethics business stakeholders are able to make the company resilient, as governance maintains high ethical standards in business activities which includes the collaboration of power, management of risk and enablement of business continuity and growth (Granville Dine, 2013). Drawing from our case company Cocoa, as of 2015 the firm seems to have an effective ethical code and governance which is expected to extend to 2016 and 2017. With prediction by economist that there will be economic slowdown and subsequent fall in business as of 2018 and 2019 Max the general managers tend to indulge Andrea into unethical conducts. Globally, CEOs are expected to act with utmos t integrity and transparency, but in our case the acts Max is requesting Andrea to undertake tends to be a violation of characteristics of good ethical governance. In this case, we will analyze some of the characters that Max is trying to affect in terms of corporate governance. Accountability First, there is the issue of accountability. Accountability can be both an end in itself - addressing prominence based qualities - and a strategies towards the change of more capable and convincing affiliations. Managers and open employees are given enormous power through the laws and headings they realize, resources they control and the affiliations they regulate. Duty is a key way to deal with assurance that this power is used appropriately and as a piece of comprehension with individuals by and large interest (Berleur Goujon, 2007). Duty requires clarity about who is dependable to whom for what and that administration representatives, affiliations and officials are viewed as in charge of their decisions and execution. Hence, this shows that Andrea undertaking thoughts brought about by Max affects the accountability process in ethical governance. Therefore, it is recommended that Andrea shouldnt consider Max thoughts as it would affect accountability to the shareholders developed reports. Transparency Transparency tends to be an imperative piece of good organization, and clear fundamental authority is essential for the private portion to settle on composed decisions and endeavors (Holzinger et al, 2007). Obligation and the lead of law require openness and incredible information so bigger measures of association, outside investigators and the general populace can affirm execution and consistence to law (Widdows, 2013). Hence, if Andrea decides to use another method apart from the straight line depreciation method to manipulate data. He tends to affect the transparency of the shareholders financial data. Thus, this tend to affect the decisions by shareholders during the 2018 and 2019 adverse economic conditions as stated by economist. Taking of such actions by Andrea tends to impede efficiency in an organizations decision making process. Reliability and predictability The rule of law suggests the institutional approach of setting, decoding and executing laws and various orientation (Said et al, 2014). It surmises that choices taken by government must be set up in law and that private firms and people are shielded from subjective choices. Consistency requires association that is free from distortionary motivations - through corruption, nepotism, support or catch by thin private intrigue packs; ensures property and individual rights; and completes some kind of institutionalized investment funds (Sunder Rajan, 2012). This gives a level of immovable quality and consistency that is key for firms and people to take fantastic choices. Drawing analysis from our case firm, Cocoa, undertaking of Max idea by Andrea tends to affect the degree of stability in a firm. Andrea actions based on Max thoughts of manipulating data tends to affect the reliability and predictability of Cocoa. Therefore, this shows that Andrea shouldnt consider the unethical codes that Max is persuading him to undertake. Technical and Managerial Competence Specific and managerial wellness of business employees is a prominent component of good organization. There may be to lesser degree a basic than it used to be, as access to preparing has upgraded, yet quick changes require consistent change of aptitudes (Idowu et al, 2015). Based on our case study, the plans by the manager Max tend to affect the technical and managerial competence of the firm. When technical and managerial competence becomes compromised, it means that Cocoa will be working under the prestige of downfall. Hence, this means that Andrea should critically think of the consequences of the actions that he would be undertaking. The above discussion tends to effectively discuss on the characteristics of good ethics governance. Therefore, this characteristics tend to sufficiently analyze our case study. Based on the above discussion there is need of Max understanding that he is the firms ethics officer. Ethics Officer is simply portraying him or her as the boss whose standard obligation lies in finishing a legitimate code of definitive ethics. More certainly it can be pointed out that the Ethics Officer is some person who guarantees the affiliation is doing its best to satisfy accomplices (each one of those inside and remotely related to the firm, for instance, specialists, shareholders, clients, suppliers, the area amass likewise, the overall population in general). As can be seen, this is 'an extensive measure of work' for a singular person. Considering this by Max could refrain Andrea from undertaking the initial thoughts that he had advocated since it would be a violation of his duty as the ethics officer (he is the manager). Recommendations The focus here is on providing Andrea the best solution to the situation that he is facing using the AASB116 reports. Therefore, they include: It is mandatory according to the AASB116 standards that there should be effective application of an organizations accounting for property, plants as well as the equipments expect when there is another standards that permits a different accounting treatment. Hence, this means that through the consideration of this standard he is required by law to effectively use the correct accounting method set by the firm which is straight line method of depreciation to calculate the firms profits. As a result, Andrea should not undertake the ideas Max develops because ethically and in consideration of the AASB116 standards developing the correct tends to prevent other uncertain events. The AASB116 recommends that there should be independence when it comes to development of financial records. Therefore, Andrea should understand that as an accountant being independent involves not following others peoples opinions or ideas in regards to reporting of financial data. For years we have witnessed many firms fall as a result financial data being influenced by the CEO. A good example is Enron Company in the US which fell as a result of no independency among the auditing and accounting teams. Their results were influenced by the CEO to show that the firm is profitable and attract more investors whereas that wasnt the case (Lo?Tter, 2011). Later, the people responsible in the accounting scam were held liable of their acts. Therefore, taking the case of Cocoa, Andrea should understand that the decisions made by him in regards to drafting the final financial information for the shareholders should be transparent in regards to how the business is operating. Hence, if he conside rs undertaking the unethical codes suggested by Max, if there develops any form of uncertainty and the business collapses. He will be held responsible because of the manipulation of accounting data since he failed to act independently as an accountant. The AASB116 law requires that there be transparency in the accounting process. To expound on this when there is transparency, it means that there is good corporate governance and ethics. Drawing from our case analysis, if Andrea decides to take Max thoughts he is somehow promoting unethical acts which shouldnt be accepted in firms. Therefore, if Andrea decides to stick with the organizational plan where there is accountable financial data he will be promoting some good ethical codes such as; truthfulness where employees to the firm will focus on being honest to the organizational dealings, integrity where there isnt any form of fraud in the organizations systems and effective decision making based on the financial information that has been provided (Simpson Taylor, 2013). Thus, this ensures that the firm shareholders are aware of the firms progress and in rise of any uncertainties they can effectively now on how to tackle the situation based on information provided by Andrea. In conclusion, the act of being ethical and having an effective governance tends to set high standards in a firm as well as clear and honest business report. Therefore, for all these to happen the management needs to be honest no matter what the financial information show. Hence, this tends promote a culture where employee hold a strong standards of themselves, reduction of potential scandals and even holding individuals responsible of their actions (Salmela Mayer, 2009). But, in our case study the manager Max seems to have ill motives in regards to manipulation of financial data to protect his good reputation. Therefore, this paper effectively revolves around the issue of ethics and governance in regards to how effective Andrea should make his decisions as the head accountant for the firm. Hence, this paper provides an effective analysis of ethics and corporate governance in terms of ethics and governance about Cocoa Company. There is also the recommendations on the steps Andrea sh ould take in regards to AASB116 standards. In general, the paper effectively analyzes the issue in Cocoa firm based on ethics and corporate governance. References Saint-Martin, D., Thompson, F. 20 Ways to Find Freelance Writing Jobs (As a Beginner)
Are you interested in working from home and becoming a freelance writer? Ive been a freelance writer for over four years now and I get asked a lot about where to find freelance writing jobs. And not just any gigs. Good quality freelance writing gigs. I know when I first started, I was obsessed with landing my first client. I had no clue what I was doing; I was a stay-at-home mom who decided to leap into freelance writing full-forcewell, part-time full forcefrom scratch. So, you know what I ended up doing? I stalked other freelance writers. I went to their websites, looked at where they were writing, read blog post after blog post, made a ton of mistakes along the way, but eventually found how to attract high-paying clients. But, you dont have to do that. Ive found 20 ways a beginner can land freelance writing work. And good writing work too! Ill go through each of them in detail for you today! If youre just thinking about freelance writing, bookmark this post and come back to it when youre ready to take action. 1. Start Cold Pitching Do you know cold pitching is a fabulous way to land recurring gigs? Theres much less competition and youll have a better chance at landing a gig when you contact clients directly. What is cold pitching? Its when you contact bloggers, entrepreneurs, companies, small businesses or startups and let them know how you a freelance writer can help grow their business. Yes, I know, it sounds hard (and scary) doesnt it? Especially if youre brand new to freelance writing. But, you know what? Its totally easy to do. First you need to locate businesses to cold pitch to. Maybe you noticed they dont have a blog but should. Or, on Twitter you see they are trying to grow their online presence and you think your content can help with that. Once you locate these places, all you have to do is draft up a cold pitch and send it off! In your pitch make sure to include: How you found out about them Who you are How you can help them 2. Pitch to a Job Board Ad If youre new to freelance writing and you want to find quality jobs, responding to job ads is your best bet. Its also the main way many new writers use for finding consistent work. And its something I tell my course students to do as it helps you gain confidence as a new freelance writer. A bonus to using job boards over a freelance market place like Upwork or Guru to find a writing gig, is there isnt any bidding. Entrepreneurs, small businesses, and start-ups post job ads to freelance writing job boards and you pitch to these ads. Sometimes you are asked to give your rate; other times the job ad specifies a starting rate for content. While there are paid job boards you can use, I would suggest you first start using free job boards. I was able to find my first freelance writing job writing 800-word blog posts for $100 on a free job board. Here are the job boards to start pitching to: Problogger Blogging Pro Canadian Freelance Writing (you dont need to be Canadian to apply to these jobs) All Freelance Writing Job Board Contena Check out my step-by-step guide on an insanely fast way to find freelance writing jobs using job boards. 3. Follow Tweets From Job Boards Did you know social media can be a goldmine for landing gigs? I didnt know either until it happened to me several times. Twitter is a great place to find freelance writing jobs quickly and its a great way to build relationships with potential clients. And by following certain freelance writing job boards you wont be hard-pressed trying to land a gig during a dry spell. For example, I found this tweet recently: Want to know which job boards I follow: @Write_Jobs @WhoPaysWriters @JJobs_tweets 4. Ask Friends, Family and Work Okay, this may be a no-brainer, but you never know until you ask! Before you make your leap into freelance writing, let your friends and family know. Doing this can help secure your first samples as a new writer. Your friend or family member may need you to edit their rsum or just write an ad for their flower shop. When you decide to quit your 9-5 job to do freelance writing full-time, let your work and coworkers know. They may end up being your first client and can provide you with your first testimonial! Its also important to be ready at all times for potential writing gigs in your day-to-day life. This means creating business cards that you can quickly give to friends and family. You may also end up finding another writer in your town! Ive met two freelance writers where I live and meet up with one of them regularly! 5. Use Your Website The best way to attract high-paying clients is to have a professional looking website. But, if you are just starting out, this may not be an option for you right off the bat. Maybe you have a personal blog that youve built during your spare time. You can definitely use your site to offer your freelance writing servicesin the beginning. Eventually, though, to really ramp up your business youll want to invest in a self-hosted WordPress siteand create a professional looking writer website. *Check out my super simple, techy-freestep-by-step tutorial to start a blog for your business (theres even a video to show you how to start your website). Dont think a brand spanking new writer can do this? Just take a look at my course participants websites after taking my complete freelance writing course: And if you want to get away from churning out 500 word posts for a measly $20, this is the route you go. I teach in-depth the precise pages to have on your site and the type of copy that attracts prospects in my course since I know having a strong writer website is essential to a successful business. 6. Guest Post (For Free!) What? How can writing for free pay off? The quickest answer is that when you guest post on popular sites hundreds and thousands of people will see your writing. And you can bet one of those viewers is a potential client. For me, this is how I was able to first build my portfolio and eventually land more clients. Pitching to job ads is great, but if you dont have a good set of samples especially from pieces published on other peoples sites it will be hard to land a quality client, but not impossible. I didnt have any published articles or samples when I landed my first quality writing gig, so it can happen, but its difficult. So, where do you guest post? Its up to you. You can do a quick Google search, niche + write for us and see what happens. This is the result for, parent blog + write for us Visit their guest post guidelines and pitch your post idea! And dont forget to spend a few minutes drafting your author bio. This is the best piece of copy you have to convince readers to come over to your site. I use several different author bios depending on where I am guest posting. For example, for my guest post over on Successful Blogging, I wrote: Elna Cain is a freelance writer. She writes for Blogging Wizard, PageWiz, WPKube and more. She works closely with B2C and B2B businesses providing blog writing, ghostwriting and copywriting services. Not quite sure freelance writing is for you? Why not try her totally free course, Get Paid to Write Online! 7. Network With Other Freelance Writers You know, the best thing you can do for your new freelance writing biz is to network with other writers. Remember, we are all in this together and it isnt a competition! When I first started, I reached out to a few freelance writers (that I was stalking at the time!) and asked them their opinion on a starting rate. While most said go with your gut, I was grateful for their interaction and their patience with my numerous questions. A few months later, I had freelance writers refer work to me! How amazing was that? In fact, one writer introduced me to my ideal client and I cant thank her enough! And now, when Im swamped and cant take on more freelance writing work, I offer mycourse students first dibs on potential jobs! Its a win-win when you network. So, if youve been following a freelance writer ahem, me! go ahead and reach out them. 8. Start Warm Pitching Hold up! Didnt I start this post by telling you to cold pitch and now I want you to start warm pitching. What gives? Well, to maximize your chances at landing a quality writing gig, you need to work both ends indirect and direct approaches. While cold pitching is a direct way to land work, warm pitching, on the other hand, is a more indirect and slower way. It all centers around creating relationships with brands and business. For example, when I find a business in my niche, I follow them and Like their Facebook fan page. That way I can keep an eye on them and engage with their posts when I can. So, if they tweet out a post on their blog, Ill read it and then respond in hopes of getting on a prospects radar: Over time, I will nurture this relationship and then Ill formally introduce who I am and inquire about a writing gig. 9. Say Youre For Hire How easy is this? If you have a social media profile which you should! advertise that youre for hire. It seems obvious but many new freelance writers dont state whether or not they are for hire. Prospects wont know if you have time to take on more clients so when you tell them you are for hire, it just makes it easier for them to consider you. Also, it lets other freelance writers know that you are available for writing work. Early on when I first started freelance writing, I was lucky enough to land a writing job from simply saying I was for hire. A prospect messaged me on LinkedIn and told me another writer had referred me to him. I had no clue who this writer was, so I messaged her back and asked how my name came up in their conversation. She had replied by saying my for hire signature had alerted her that I was looking for work! Presto, landed a gig! 10. Visit Local Printing and Design Companies Another great way to land consistent work is to contact your local printing and web design companies. Sure, you can go to your business district and let the local dentist or local pet shop owner know that youre a writer for hire, but this takes a lot of time out of your day. A quick way around this is to visit only web design companies and let them know theres a writer available. These businesses have a full roster of clients that need web content. This is what I did early on in my freelance writing career and its helped with finding consistent work. 11. Pitch Your Story For many print journalists and writers, when they decide to go online and freelance, they stick to writing for publications and selling their stories. While this can be extremely lucrative (for publication you can get upwards to a $1 or more per word), its highly inconsistent and it takes months to get paid. But, its still a great option for writers. All Freelance Writing has a library of publications that accept and pay for submissions. Many sites pay for your story too!Do a Google search for publication pay submission or magazine pay submission for ideas. Generally you have to cold pitch your story idea first and then pitch each additional time for subsequent stories. 12. Join Facebook Groups There is a lot of potential for writing gigs on Facebook. If you know the groups to join then you should have no problem finding consistent work. But, this approach does take time as you are building relationships with potential leads. For me, I belong to several entrepreneurial Facebook groups and I do my best to join in on the conversation. I might also throw out a question to see if there are entrepreneurs that need help and are overworked. For example, I might ask, Whats the one thing you wish was easier in your business? From here Ill take a look at peoples answers and if content is mentioned, Ill respond with a, if you ever need some writing, Im your gal! Some Facebook groups to join are: The Smart Passive Income Community The Business Lounge Mastermind Christian Entrepreneurs: Building Your Business With Purpose It never hurts to give it a try and put yourself out there! Many entrepreneurs arent aware of job boards or just dont have the time to sift through hundreds of pitches. If you put yourself out there in a Facebook group, you could very well end up with a gig that hour. 13. Ask for a Referral Okay, this way means you have to have a client already, so if you dont, then this may not be a good way for you. However, if youve landed a few clients, this would be a great time to ask for a referral. I know, it can be scary! It was for me when I first started, but then I thought, the worst they can say is no or they cant. You can email a client and ask, or use social media like I have done in the past: Using this tactic has generated me thousands of dollars in freelance writing income and when I have a spot open for another client, I always first approach my existing clients to see if they have someone in mind. And since most of my clients are quality clients, I know with confidence they will refer me to another quality client. By the way, I did end up landing that client and love writing for them. 14. Try Craigslist I know. Im sure youve seen or heard that Craigslist has low quality writing jobs and its not a place to score gigs. Well, I know for a fact Craigslist can be a well of quality clients. You just have to know what cities to look in. If you want the best gigs around, check the New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Houston and Miami sites. Businesses in big cities often have big budgets. So do a quick search in each of these cities a couple times a week and get pitching! 15. Pitch to Sites That Pay Writers Besides publications and magazines, there are hundreds of blogs that pay for your guest post. What? Why did I tell you earlier to guest post for free when you can get paid to guest post? Landing a paid guest spot is a bit more challenging than landing a free guest spot. So, while youre building your portfolio with guest posts, you can also pitch to job ads and paid guest blogs to earn some cash. To get started, check out Sophie Lizards, 75 Blogs that Pay $50 to $2,000 a Post by signing up to her newsletter. You can also go on Pinterest or search in Google for blogs that pay for guest posts. Personally, I never used this approach only because its a one-off gig. You write the piece, pitch, wait to see if its approved, then get paid a few weeks later. Then you do it all over again. Id rather pitch to guest posts for free while pitching to job boards and landing recurring gigs for more consistent pay. 16. LinkedIn Jobs Did you know LinkedIn has a job board? I never did until recently. I have no idea why because I do spend a considerable amount of time networking on LinkedIn. Go to their job board and all you do is put in your job (writer) and see what pops up. From here you can decide how you want to approach these businesses use a warm pitch or a cold pitch. If you have the time to invest in building a relationship and you have clients already, I would use a warm pitch approach. But, if you are itching to land work now, go ahead and add these places to your list to cold pitch. Guess what? Theres another way you can use LinkedIn to find more freelance writing jobs? Want to know what it is? Its using your header image for your profile! Check out this video to see exactly what I mean (and subscribe to my YouTube channel when you have a chance!) 17. Use a Content Agency Okay, I dont mean any content agency. The big ones usually dont pay well and the work isnt the greatest. Instead, you want to look for smaller content agencies. For example, Tom Ewer of Leaving Work Behind, has a small content agency called WordCandy. Theyre in the WordPress space and are always looking for writers. The advantages to working with a small content agency is: Usually better pay Better training 1:1 support Free Course on Getting Paid to Write Online 18. Use a Freelance Writer Directory Did you know these exist? They do! Well I only know of one but its a good one and you never know right? The point is, when youre just starting out as a freelance writer, you need to put yourself out there. So by guest posting, pitching, being on social media and in directories, you are everywhere at all times. This increases your chances of a prospect finding you and hiring you! Jennifer Mattern of All Freelance Writing has a directory of freelance writers for hire. When you pay $15 you can post your profile with your headshot. Heres Alicia Rades profile: This might be worth a shot for you so give it a try! 19. Reddit Reddit is another social media site where you can find potential writing gigs and post that you are a writer looking for gigs. And dont think youll only find low-paying gigs on Reddit. I recently saw this on their subreddit /r/HireAWriter. Other subreddits to pay attention to: /r/ForHire a place for companies and entrepreneurs who are hiring. This isnt specific to freelance writing so youll have to sort through the postings. You can also advertise your services in this subreddit. /r/WritingOpportunities is where you can find publications that pay writers for submissions. 20. Wow Your Clients and Make More Money! Ive talked a lot on my blog (and over on FreelancerFAQs) about wowing your clients. If you can free up time for your clients or make them more money with your content, youll probably make more money too. How? Well, one of my clients asked me to write for several of his other blogs not because I produce the best content, but because I also format my content for easy uploading and readability, I provide the most up-to-date stats and facts in my posts and Im easy to work with! I have clients telling me all the time that Im their go-to writer. Because of this, I dont have to pitch every day; if I wow my clients, theyll give me more projects. The Real Jean Valjean essays
The Real Jean Valjean essays Jean Valjean: He is, in my opinion, one of the most simple and at the same time one of the most complex characters ever written. As readers follow his journey through Victor Hugos classic novel Les Miserables, they come to see that Valjean is a passionate person and his story is one filled with many emotions. Love, hate, shame, guilt, the need to prove oneself... All of these timeless issues are embodied in this one mans voyage to freedom and happiness. Through the years, Les Miserables has been adapted into many things- movies, plays, and even musicals. Every director has faced the challenge of bringing to life the multifaceted character of Valjean; some succeed and some fail. After viewing both Bille August and Glenn Jordans interpretation of the book, I believe Augusts presentation of Jean Valjean is by far more believable as a human being. In Glenn Jordans film, Jean Valjean is played by Richard Jordan, who seems too young an actor to master the intricate details of Valjeans personality and psyche. As the film progresses, Jordans acting becomes increasingly tedious and awkward and he makes no effort to add depth to his portrayal of Valjean as the character ages. His actions seem calculated and cold, as if he is merely reciting his lines instead of playing the part; the emotions he speaks of never truly reach his eyes. Jordan simply goes through the motions and as a result, makes Valjean seem detached and uninteresting when the exact opposite is true. On the other hand, Bille Augusts film stars Liam Neeson as the good-hearted Frenchman who spends his life making up for his past mistakes. Neeson has the ability to completely immerse himself in a role, which is exactly what he does in this film. He plays Valjean with such passion and poise that the viewer cannot help but sympathize and accept Valjeans flaws for his good intentions. Neesons acting retains a...

Henry Peach Robinson Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Henry Peach Robinson - Essay Example The best-known nineteenth-century popularizer of fine-art principles among photographers was Henry Peach Robinson, an English commercial photographer who published a series of popular studio manuals introducing design concepts such as balance (of lines and mass), composition (of figures and lines), and chiaroscuro to both American and European photographers." (Brown, 187-8) Through his single most famous text, Pictorial Effect in Photography (1869), Robinson celebrated pictorialistic style which helped the development of photography in general. Therefore, Henry Peach Robinson is the most important photographer and theoretician of the nineteenth century and he is celebrated as the pioneer of pictorialist photography. An analysis of the major works by this eminent photographer and the photographic tools and processes used by him helps one in comprehending the elements of pictorialism and the pictorialistic style in detail. ... "The term pictorialism was used generally by photographers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to describe an artistic approach to the making of photographs as well as to define a number of specific groups organized to promote art photographers and their work... In 1869, Henry Peach Robinson published his Pictorial Effect in Photography, giving weight to the notion of photography as a self-conscious art form and popularizing the critical concept of pictorialism." (Peres, 103) It is essential to comprehend the definition of pictorialism exactly as the modern usage of the term has been found misleading and pictorialism original referred to any photograph that put the completed picture first and the subject second. Therefore, pictorialism also incorporated the more modern trends the photographs of this category emphasized atmosphere or viewpoint more importantly than the subject. The historical significance of the movement also helps one to realize the various aspects of pictorial ism. "Pictorialism served historically as a reaction against the flood of unexceptional and easy photographs enabled by the technical advances of the 1880s. Convenient innovations such as the dry plate hand-held camera, and flexible roll film, as well as improved camera design and optical sharpness, made camera work available to a larger group of amateurs whose primary concern was the graphic recording of information." (Peres, 103) The photographers of pictorialistic movement were disapproving of the literal representation of subjects and the scientific and commercial applications of the medium. Therefore, the formation of a group under the banner of pictorialism needs to be realized as a natural and spontaneous attempt to promote

Stress Management in the RN Role Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Stress Management in the RN Role - Essay Example According to Taylor and Barling (2004), career stress or simply burnout is a threat to the well-being of health workers. Career strain has been defined by Farrington (1997) as bleeding oneself for the benefit of others. Symptoms of burnout are evident on these individuals' emotional, cognitive and physical facets (Taylor & Barling, 2004). These symptoms described by Farrington (1997) include: lower level of energy, pessimism, feelings of helplessness, depersonalization, lowered self-esteem and even cynicism. Mental health nursing has been closely connected in dealing with burnout and stress on the nursing field (Taylor & Barling, 2004). Rees & Smith, in their 1991 article, has provided a documentation of the stress order of National Health Service professionals in the United Kingdom. It shows that community mental health nurses (CMHN) occupied the top place alongside speech therapist followed by general nurses and mental health nurses who are ward-based both in the third position. Another survey by Nolan (1995) on mental health nurses used the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) in measuring caseness. Caseness is a name pertaining to the probability of acquiring a psychiatric disorder. The GHQ created by David Goldberg is available in 4 different versions with varying number of items-12, 28, 30, and 60 item Likert-type (with 4 choices) scale. Since the GHQ is a screening measure to identify trivial psychiatric problems, the questionnaire items aim to know the general health of the respondents over the recent weeks. It can be used with the general public but mostly used with health care professionals. Higher scores in the questionnaire imply psychological distress of the individual (General Health Questionnaire, n.d.). The GHQ was also used by Brown et al (1994) and Fagin et al (1995) to measure the psychological distress of health workers. Results indicated that CMHN have the highest psychological distress among the nursing sample. Ward nurses were also seen to have high levels of depersonalization. This was backed up with the researchers by the explanation that ward nurses have lower levels of empathy towards their patients. Stress in psychiatric nurses has been identified with their interaction to mentally ill patients (Melchior et al 1996). Different sources of stress include the patients tended to by the nurses, the co-nurses and doctors they are working with, the facilities in the hospital and the work itself (Taylor & Barling, 2004). Specifically, the researchers cited examples of stressful activities by CMHN nurses. Usually, they are stressed when in contact with the nerve-racking conditions of the work place-long waiting lines of patients, suicidal patients who can be very emotionally stressful, violent patients and hazardous work areas in different communities (Taylor & Barling, 2004). Some of these conditions were also true for ward-based nurses. The literature has wide accounts of different nursing fields as having specific types of stressors (Farrington 1995; Leiter & Harvie 1996; Mcleod 1997; Wheeler 1998a). Stress indicators in general have been identified in the literature. These include dealing with different types of patients (Haynes, LaCroix, & Lippin, 1987), doing the same work over and over again (Haynes et al., 1987; Karasek, 1979), the educational attainment of the individual needed in the job
